CHILD SEX ABUSERS CAN BE ANYONE.

ABOUT SAFETY TIPS & DANGERS

SomeoneTheyKnow.info is a collaborative effort, supported by Prevent Child Abuse - Indiana, Indiana Youth Services Association, The Health Foundation of Greater  Indianapolis and  Kids First Trust Fund.  The program is designed to raise awareness about child sex abuse, specifically, to educate parents about who are potential sex abusers , that anyone can be an abuser.
We know increasing public education and awareness are the keys to the prevention of child sexual abuse.

FACT #1:Nine out of ten child sexual abuse victims are abused by someone they know and trust or someone a family member knows.  The abuser can be a parent’s friend or partner, a teacher or coach, a doctor or religious leader, a neighbor, a relative, or an older sibling or older youth.

FACT #2:  One in 10 children will be sexually abused before their 18th birthday.  40% of those victims are abused by an older youth.  The more you know about child sexual abuse, the easier it will become to discuss sex abuse with your child.  Education will empower your child to protect himself/herself.

FACT #3:  Almost all incidents of child sexual abuse occur in one-on-one settings with a child and an adult.   To help reduce possible risk for your child, limit the time your child would be spendingone-on-one with another adult or older youth if it is a situation in which they cannot be freely observed.
